Thoughtless Mirth

Our world offers us no end of mindless entertainment. You can fritter away all your time by distracting yourself with various addictions and amusements that numb you to reality and separate you from the world God has created, from the people God has placed around you, from the work God has given you to do, and ultimately even from the knowledge of yourself. And worst of all is that in the midst of such thoughtless mirth, you are able to convince yourself that you are happy.

God gives us a different picture. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of mirth. True joy, real lasting happiness that is worth having comes on the other side of sorrow. If we distract ourselves from our trials, if we numb ourselves and drown them out, we’re missing out on the very things God has brought into our lives to lead us to true joy in Him.
