Do Not Disavow

Do Not Disavow By: Rick Davis   When Charlemagne established law Salic in barb’rous land, The gospel flourished, and he saw Christ’s praise on every hand.   (“Do you approve his methods now?”) I do not disavow.   King Godfrey took Jerusalem From bloody paynim hands And brought a halt to Musselmen Invading Christian lands.   (“He did some mean things anyhow!”) I do not disavow.   King Richard with his scarlet shield And passant lions ‘bossed Rode forth again unto the field To regain what was lost.   (“His deeds at Acre you allow?”) I do not disavow.   Unto the Germans Luther brought The gospel full restored, And Calvin at Geneva taught The glory of the Lord.   (“The Jews? Christ is Sufficient

The gospel is simple, and so simple in fact that we tend to want to complicate it. Sure you’re a Christian, but if you were a really good Christian you would celebrate (or not celebrate) these holidays, you would eat (or not eat) these foods, you would engage in these spiritual exercises, read these particular books, pray these particular prayers. And so on.

However, there is nothing you can do that can add to the work of Christ, nothing that can stand you in better stead with the Father than what Christ has done for you. In Christ, all the fullness of God dwells bodily. You have been filled with Christ, buried with Him in baptism, raised with Him through faith, seated with Him at the Father’s right hand, and forgiven of your sins. What more is there for you to do? And here you see a representation of all God has done for you in Christ at this table. Touch, taste, and see that Christ is sufficient, He is all you need.
