New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year, everybody! It's 2013!

Normally, I'm not the sort of person who goes in for New Year's resolutions. A simple reading goal on Goodreads is fine for me. But this year, I've decided to be daring and different. I'm making two big resolutions this year in an experiment to see how long I can keep them. And so that there will be an enduring record of my rousing success or pitiful failure, I'm going to tell the world about it here on my blog.

Resolution 1: Reading

Those who know me know that I read quite a bit. This year, however, I want to try something different than I have in the past. Rather than simply focusing on getting a large number of books read, I'm going to set certain books as a goal and try to read several heavier books that I've been wanting to get to for some time. I'll probably also set a book number on Goodreads, but my priority will be getting these big ones done:

Resolution 2: Losing Weight

Ah yes, the resolution that every single American makes every year: lose weight. But of course, it's no new thing. If Plato can be believed, the people of Athens in his day were exactly the same. He writes in the Republic (516c) "One day he gets drunk at a party, the next day he's sipping water trying to lose weight; then again, he sometimes takes exercise, [and] sometimes takes things easy without a care in the world..." Well, this is the year I try to lose weight. I was pretty skinny in high school.

And then college happened, and by the time I got married, I had packed on a few pounds.

Then, a few years later, I lost back down to my former size.

And then, I got a job where I literally sit at a desk prepping lessons and teaching live internet classes from 8:00-5:00. Thus, I've noticed that over the last couple of years, I've been enlarging my territory without even having to pray the Prayer of Jabez. So this is the year I reclaim my waistline! My goal is to be down to 160 lbs by the end of the year.

Keeping Track

So there are my resolutions. I've put a link in the sidebar to the right called "2013 Resolutions" where I will be keeping track of my success/failure at each resolution. That way if I fail it will be a public failure, and I'll have more of an incentive to succeed.

Sorry Rick but something about the weight loss thing reminds me of you talking on the phone with Grandad when you were 9 months old...He told you, "Fat fat fat & if you don't behave I'm gonna get you!" Hmm... maybe you can use that as incentive so Grandad don't get you....lol. Love ya buddy!
