KC Podcast - Episode 117: Passing the Baton

Reasons TV is Obsolete

Television is obsolete. Seriously. There is no need for anyone to own a television in these days of the internet. I mean, why watch another boringly formulaic sitcom when you can enjoy fresh, imaginative content on YouTube?

Wait. What's that? You can't find anything fresh or imaginative on YouTube? It's nothing but fake movie trailers, fan-made music videos, and silly rants and memes? Well, have no fear, for I have culled the top 5 things from YouTube that are actually worth watching. Here they are:

1. Rhett and Link
Self-proclaimed internetainers Rhett and Link are a couple of native North Carolinians who got their start doing comedy shows for Campus Crusade. They are now known for making hilarious commercials for small, local businesses for free, creating zany music videos, and for their daily show, Good Mythical Morning.

2. Whitestone Motion Pictures
Whitestone is a small film company specializing in short films and based out of Atlanta. Their videos are all top-notch professional and are a visual wonder. From the hilarious "Consumerism the Musical", to the uplifting "That's Magic", to the cautionary and steampunky "Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man", everything Whitestone makes is great. And the best part? All their films are available for free on their YouTube site.

3. Marble Hornets
Troy Wagner and Joseph Delage helm this supernatural thriller web serial that has even gotten the notice of Roger Ebert, who called it "remarkably well done". The story follows a film student, Jay, who saves a bag of tapes from his friend Alex's student film. Alex wanted to burn the tapes, and after watching them, Jay discovers why...but not before finding himself being stalked by a tall supernatural being with no face. And the creators keep it classy with no gore or bad language. If you like scary, but not profanity, then this series is for you.

4. Neil Cicierega
Neil Cicierega is the guy behind the famous Potter Puppet Pals, which have long been one of the funniest things on YouTube. But did you know that Neil makes other videos as well? From his kitschy, retro music video about Ronald Reagan to short sketches to a parody of the aforementioned "Marble Hornets", Neil will make you laugh, and cause waste far more time than you should on the internet.

5. HISHE
Have you ever watched a movie and afterwards said to yourself, "That was an awesome movie, but the ending was horrible"? Well have no fear; the good folks at How It Should Have Ended (HISHE) redo the endings to major blockbusters in ways that actually make sense. And they usually have some great witty banter between Superman and Batman.

So there you have it folks. Five great reasons to toss your TV and watch the internet. Now at this time, you should probably go outside and get some fresh air.

I've watched tons of Rhett and Link and HISHE videos but none of these other ones. That shall change.

To this day, I still get the Consumerism song in my head. Especially when I go into a Starbucks.

@Rose, Yes, Consumerism is definitely the one to start with!

@ Erica, Have you also seen Wake O Sleeper? Got a nice O Brother Where Art Thou? feel with some clever C.S. Lewis references and Biblical allusions.
