The "Dark Ages"

We hear the common myth that throughout the "Dark Ages" European culture was held in ignorance by the superstitious Church until the Reniassance came, and the light of Reason shone in the darkness and set people free. This simply is not true. In reading Foucault's Pendulum, I ran across a great quote about the time of the Renaissance that cleverly illustrates this point.

"I devoted myself to Renaissance philosophers and I discovered that the men of secular modernity, once they had emerged from the darkness of the Middle Ages, had found nothing better to do than devote themselves to cabala and magic."
